The Fuji Xerox DocuPrint M265 z belongs to a series that we’ve visited on this blog in the past. This is the most advanced device in the series that also included our previously reviewed Fuji Xerox M225dw and Fuji Xerox P265dw. If you read our review of the M225dw, then you already know a lot about the Fuji Xerox DocuPrint M265 z because the inherent technology is the same. The M265 z just carries more features. Therefore, in case the M225dw wasn’t printer enough for you, you can consider the M265z.
The Fuji Xerox DocuPrint M265 z is a multifunction monochrome laser printer. This means that you can print, copy, scan, and fax from the same device. The M265 z is not meant for large-scale printing. You can probably deploy it in small businesses or workgroups. Generally, multifunction devices are meant for businesses but the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) feels that the M265 z can be useful to individual users that have extensive needs too. Here’s our detailed review.
Strengths of Fuji Xerox DocuPrint M265 z
From the broader perspective, the Fuji Xerox DocuPrint M265 z is a winner. Its feature set is such that it offers lots of positives to those who understand their needs appropriately. We’ll start listing them with the print speed. The device is rated to produce documents at a speed of 30 pages per minute (ppm) which is more than respectable for the market segment that is being targeted here.
This speed doesn’t come at the price of quality. The output quality of this device remains excellent within the accepted spectrum for monochrome laser printers. The neither exceeds the expectations but it doesn’t let you down either which isn’t something you can say for all its competitors. It is rated to print at up to a maximum resolution of 2400 x 600 dots per inch (dpi).
Connectivity can also be said to be a major point in favour of the Fuji Xerox DocuPrint M265 z. The standard variant of this machine comes standard with three different connectivity options in the form of USB 2.0, Ethernet, and wireless. Having these options will make it easier for you to decide where you want to place this device in your Small Office / Home Office setup. The device is also compatible with mobile platforms such as Apple AirPrint and Google Cloud Print in addition to apps such as Mopria and Fuji Xerox Print Utility.
Finally, it should definitely be mentioned that the Fuji Xerox DocuPrint M265 z offers the automatic duplexing facility. This should help you cut down your paper costs and even reduce your carbon footprint.
Weaknesses of Fuji Xerox DocuPrint M265 z
Before we move onto weaknesses, we want to specify that most of these weaknesses are forced. What we mean is that we don’t really think that these elements are big enough to be counted as weaknesses. However, we do need to fill this section of our post out so we felt that these variables qualified, even if distantly.
The cost of this device is the first thing we want to point out. Upwards of $200, while not being excessive for the market segment, may be slightly beyond the reach of individual users. This wouldn’t even be a concern if the OEM hadn’t targeted this machine at personal users. Since they did, we feel compelled to point this out.
Running costs of this device could also be an issue, especially if you insist on using genuine cartridges. Using generic or compatible cartridges will reduce your operating costs drastically and make this little limitation disappear.
Also, if you don’t plan on doing a lot of printing, then running costs shouldn’t even be something you should think about. Additionally, let us add that the running costs of this device are reduced because of Fuji Xerox’s smart decision to keep drum and toner cartridges separate.
This is another limitation that isn’t exactly a limitation – paper handling. We would’ve liked to see a greater paper handling capacity but that isn’t the case. If that were the case, then this device would probably have been targeted at the small to medium scale market. For the personal user and small workgroup market segment, paper handling capacity is decent. The only flaw is the absence of options.
The device comes with a total paper input capacity of 251 sheets divided between a 250-sheet paper tray and a single sheet manual feed slot. There are no add-on options available. This paper input capacity is supported by the maximum monthly duty cycle of about 10,000 sheets. In terms of scanning, the device does possess a 35- sheet single pass duplexing Automatic Document Feeder (ADF).
Key Features of Fuji Xerox DocuPrint M265 z
Speaking of the scanner, this device possesses an accomplished one. The scanner can scan in duplex and has the ability to send scanned images directly to the PC, email, file, image, and FTP if you use the Control Centre utility provided with the device.
The Fuji Xerox DocuPrint M265 z is neither incredibly compact nor cumbersome. Its size corresponds with expectations for a device in its class. The M265 z measures 316.5mm in height, 398.5 in depth, and 409mm in width. You shouldn’t have trouble moving it around in your office as it weighs only about 11.5 Kg.
It has a 266 MHz processor that is backed by a 64 MB RAM. There is no option to expand the latter, in case you were wondering. The combination of these two means that the print engine of this device can spit out the first printed page in less than 8.5 seconds. There are a number of modes built into the device such as Toner Save, N-up, Poster, Header – Footer, Watermarks, and ID card printing.
The Toner Save mode gives the machine the freedom to vary the density of the toner on the page being printed which results in significant savings. The N-up mode also helps save toner and paper by printing multiple images onto a single sheet of paper. The Poster, Header – Footer, and Watermarks modes are self-explanatory. Easy ID card printing is also a good feature to have.
On the top of the device, you’ll find a 68.58mm colour touchscreen display. The touchscreen display is accompanied by a keypad, a Power button, and status indicator lights. The Fuji Xerox DocuPrint M265 z comes standard with a 12-month Quick Exchange warranty.
